American Elm (Ulmus americana l.)
The American Elm with its graceful form and large size was named the "Lady of The Forest by early North American settlers. The Elm was a very popular urban tree before the spread of Dutch Elm disease as one mature tree can provide the cooling equivalent of five air conditioners. Many Elms were wiped out by Dutch Elm disease but fortunately treatment for the disease that allows fungi to attack the tree's vascular system is now available.

Weeping Willow (Salix x sepulcralis)
The flowing branches of the willow tree make it a very popular tree despite its tendency to age in a less than gracious manner. Willows are often planted on the borders of water so that their interlacing roots may protect the bank from erosion. Almost all willows take root very readily from cuttings or even branches lying on the ground. A story exists about such growth from a cutting that involves the poet Alexander Pope, who begged a willow twig from a parcel tied with twigs sent from Spain to Lady Suffolk. This willow twig was planted and thrived, and legend has it that all of England's weeping willows are descended from this first one.

Oak Tree (Quercus)
The majestic oak tree is a member of the Beech family. Oak trees produce acorns once a year during the fall. Trees can start producing acorns when they are 20 years old, but sometimes can go all the way to 50 years before the first production. This particular tree lives in a farm field near my family home and I have driven past it now for 30 some years! I can never decide which season it looks most beautiful in.

American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)
The sycamore tree is easily recognized with its mottled beautiful white bark that shows the process of bark exfoliation more openly than any other tree. Sometimes the smaller limbs look like they have been whitewashed. I was drawn to this pair of trees because of the stark contrast their barks make in the winter when they are leafless. They stand together along a country road near my home. The black walnut which is native to Virginia, has deeply-furrowed, black bark and is prized for its beautiful wood and the nutritious nuts which are avidly harvested in the autumn.
